OOC: D rank training.
Here we paint a picture of a rocky terrain, mountains jutted out of the ground carelessly with all of nature looking up upon it in awe. Standing at the base of a mountain was a single tree. It was probably the only green tree in the area. Beyond this tree, digging into the side of the mountain, was what appeared to be a shrine of some sort. A large set of stairs led up to the shrine, but then once at the mouth of the building it followed a set of stairs down. Following these stairs deep into the mountain would allow you to find a large yet shallow lake. This was a place of cleansing. She recalled just six years ago when she was with the priests of a similar shrine. They had explained that this was a place to not just clean your body, but to wash your soul. Wash it clean of the weariness and the sins of the world. Rei stood in the water, her clothing and daisho sat upon the stony steps near the bottom of the stairs that led into this lake. She dipped the bucket into the water and lifted it over her head. The water poured over her skin. It was cold. She felt the goose bumps begin to ripple across her body. She dipped the bucket into the cool water again and poured it over herself. The inside of this cavern was dark. The air smelt damp, but it was a pleasant scent. It reminded her of the way the ocean smelled. Of course this body of water was a fresh water lake and lacked the salt that the ocean had, yet its smell was just as sweet.
Once more she dipped the bucket into the water and splashed it over herself. There…her mind and body had both been cleansed. She turned to face the gaping entrance of the mountain and headed towards the steps that lead to it. She set the bucket on the bottom step and picked up the towel she had brought with her. She dried herself before clothing herself once more in the brown kimono she brought around with her. She tightened her obi around her waist and slipped her feet into her geta sandals. She looked at the daisho that sat before her. The two blades etched with her family’s ancestry. She got upon her knees and bowed before her daisho, showing the blades respect for their service. Though her life was yet young, she truly did believe that the spirits of her ancestors dwelt within her blade. Her Uncle had told her as much, and the priests also mentioned this. After a minute, she raised her head and while still upon her knees sat the wakizashi so that its kojiri touched the stone step. She wrapped the sageo between her fingers before placing it into her obi and wrapping the string around the obi. She then proceeded to do the same for the Katana. She slipped it into her obi and wrapped its sageo around the obi so that it was secure. The girl took three deep and slow breaths before standing and looking up the steps towards the entrance of the mountain.
She took the first step, and then the second. She pressed onward until she reached the mouth of the shrine. Rei cast her gaze across the base of the mountain before her. This would be the second part of her journey. The bare mountain root wasn’t that impressive, aside from the shrine totems jaunting out of the ground. Her eyes looked farther than this, all the way across the bare land before her and towards Kumogakure. The girl began to walk down the steps. Some would say that she was so young, but most of the starting warriors were young. It was a dangerous life she had chosen. She took the first step down towards the base of the mountain. Then the second. She began to sprint down the steps, her form like a ghost as it passed. Click-Clack, Click-Clack ~ the heels of her geta sandals tapped against the stone as she ran. She leapt and skipped the last few steps that were at the bottom of the set of stairs and charged towards Kumogakure. She weaved through various rocks that were standing in her path, and then she quickly scaled a chain link fence that stood before her. The girl pulled a shinobi head band from the inside of her Kimono and tied it to her obi on the right side. She entered the city through the gates, and quickly passed through the streets. She ducked into a narrow ally way and burst through the doors of a gym. She stood in the entrance of the gym, panting as she examined the contents. There were several work out machines in the gym, but she was more so interested in the obstacle course the gym provided. The floor here was dangerous. It was filled with various mechanisms and traps that would be put into use when two people were sparring.
“Ah, you’re here.” This was Master Jalapeno. He was wearing traditional hakama, however he was barefoot. Rei, noting this quickly removed her geta and placed them by the entrance before officially entering. “Quiet as usual.” The man continued to her. Jalapeno-sensei was Rei’s sword master. She often came to his dojo to train along side her typical shinobi training. “You don’t have anything to say?” Rei looked at him incredulously; he knew that she couldn’t talk. He chuckled to himself before wandering over towards a lever and pulling it. “Is your hair still wet?” She nodded to him, and just to be sure he returned to her so her could ran a hand through her hair. “Excellent. Now then, lets begin.” He told her. The man jumped down into what he called “the pit”. It was a large pit dug out of the gym floor and was filed with the aforementioned traps. Rei nodded, she carelessly jumped into the pit and immediately set off a pressure plate sensitive trap. A spear lunged at her from behind. Fortunately, the tip of the spear was covered with a large padded cloth bag instead of an actual spear head. It knocked Rei off of her feet. Her recovery had to be quick since Jalapeno-sensei was there to test her. He drew his blade and brought it down upon her. She her wakizashi with her left hand and parried the attack. The genin then skillfully drew the blade in an arc at her opponent.
The girl slipped the wakizashi back into its sheath following her katana. She rested her hand upon the saya and tsuka respectively. Her eyes met her master’s for only a moment. The sound of a click meant that it was time to move. A pillar of flame shot up from the floor. Rei pulled back, and was taken by surprise when her master sliced through the flame in order to attack her. Half drew her katana to defend her self and purposely stepped on the spear trap again. She waited a moment before dodging the spear and letting it thrust towards her master. He laughed as he easily sliced the spear into three pieces. “Using my traps against me huh? This isn’t for me, this is for you dear heart.” Jalapeno told her. Her hopped up on top of a pole and waved his hand signaling Rei to do the same on a pole standing a little ways away from him. She did so, albeit not as graceful. She stood on a pole directly across from him. She knew she had made a mistake when a large amount of spikes popped out of the floor below and the pole she was standing on began to move up and down. Jalapeno-sensei whipped out his blade and began to drill Rei. She parried with her katana and switched which pole she was standing on. She used her quick jump from pole to pole in order to give a quick slash at her opponent. She lost her balance as the pole she was standing on gave way and began to sink into the ground.
She opened up her mouth to scream, but no sound left her throat. The only thing she saw before her were spikes sprouting from the floor, yet before she hit the floor, the spikes slid back into the ground. Rei promptly smacked against the floor. Jalapeno-sensei hopped off of the pole and laughed at her, “Gyahahaha, sloppy foot work.” He told her, extending his hand for her to take. She took it and stood before him, her hand over her Tsuka. _________________

“Hmph. Think you’re fast enough to match my draw?” Rei honestly shook her head no. She didn’t expect to be faster than her own teacher, but she did strive to be as fast. They both got into a stance with their hands wavering over their tsukas. Rei pressed the tip of her thumb against the guard and slowly forced the blade out of its sheath so she could get a head start on the draw. Despite this being so, Jalapeno whipped his blade out at the speed of a lightning strike and held the blade to her neck. “Too slow.” He commented to her. She gritted her teeth and released her tsuka. Jalapeno-sensei performed the cleansing movement before sliding the blade back into the saya. Rei bowed her head in defeat. “Gyahaha. You did a good job. Don’t worry about it.” Her master wandered over towards a stool and sat upon it. “Come here, I’ll tell about how I got this sword.”
Rei nodded and sat upon her knees before Master Jalapeno. He pulled his Katana from its sheath and examined the blade. “Quality steel. This katana is made up of two different kinds of steel. A harder and a softer. The center is softer to absorb the shock from blows, but the outside is hard. It’s a work of art on a scale that not even I can fathom.” He drew his finger along the length of the blade. “This here is the signature left by the craftsmen. They cover the blade in mud so that it cools at a different speed. This particular mark belonged to your mother.” Rei raised a questioning eybrow. “Yes, I remember when she was a traveling smithy. She stopped by my dojo once and asked for a place to stay. She was a fine woman. Even more amazing was that she was surviving on her own. She used to travel back and forth between places looking for somewhere to stay. Even more impressive though is how she made these blades.” Jalapeno-sensei lifted up the weapon and examined it as if it was the first time he had done so. Rei was sure that he had looked this blade over a hundred times. This man had a sort of love in his eyes for the weapon. She felt slightly ashamed that she couldn’t feel the same towards her own weapons. She looked down at the Daisho she had been given and suddenly found the determination to love these weapons.
“Do you want this blade?” Jalapeno sensei asked? Holding the katana out for her to take. Rei shook her head, and protectively held her own blades to herself. “I see. How very wise. You are a truly grateful young woman, I think this is why you are the first student I’ve taken in over ten years. Alright then…Story time is over for now. How about we finish by performing some waza?” Jalapeno-sensei stood up from his stool and knelt next to Rei. His hands were upon his lap. Rei mimicked him and did the same. “Three cleansing breaths.” He told her once more. “There are no unnecessary movements in this waza. Even these breaths are important.” He told her. Following this he inhaled deeply, but not harshly. It was much like the way a man would take in the sweet scents of a dinner that had been set before him. She breathed in and followed his movements. He began with the first strike. The draw as it was sometimes called. They drew their blades together and created a beautiful arc as they guided the tips of their blades until their right arms were fully extended. They both grabbed the tsuka with their left hands as they raised the blade over their heads and brought the weapon down in a slash. Jalapeno-sensei pressed one knee to the floor while he stepped forward with his left foot.
"Gyahahaha. Very good. Can you show me the Nukitsuke kata?” Rei shrugged to him, and looked him over. Was he testing her? Wasn’t Nukitsuke supposed to be the basic drawing practice movement? She must have unknowingly performed it at least three times during the entire little sparring match that they had had moments before. “You see…I don’t want to have just taught you rigid movements. My goal in teaching you has always been to teach you a living and ever evolving sword style. This is the nature of Sennen-Ryu.” Rei lifted an eyebrow, what about iaijutsu? What about the fast draw techniques that he had been teaching her? Where these also nothing more than just preparation for this new sword style?
“Don’t worry about it Dear heart, you’ll be ready for it soon…we just have to make sure you are in the right shape first. Toned…but not too muscular.” Rei gave Jalapeno Sensei a curious look. “That means start doing some pushups girly.” Rei gave Jalapeno-sensei a ‘now you tell me’ look before placing her hands on the floor and began to do some push ups. “If you do the same amount of excersizes every day we should be able to not just get you to a certain level of tone…but keep you there too.” Mr. Jalapeno placed a cinder block onto Rei’s back as she was doing’ push ups. She looked up incredulously as the weight made it harder for her to bring her torso back up from the down position.
She glared at Jalapeno-sensei for a moment before brushing the cinder blocks off of her own back, forcing him to the ground and then standing on his head as he did push ups. “Hey! This is not my idea of training!” He was barking at her as he began to do his push ups. “We’re supposed to be whipping you into shape, not an old geezer like me!” Rei shook her head and stuck her tongue out at him and began to jump up and down on his back as he performed the push ups. “I’m telling your mother. Gyahahaha!” Rei rolled her eyes…everyone knew her mom was dead. Some kids also liked to call her a fatherless child…but using the curse word for that definition.
“Okay okay! That’s enough!” Jalapeno-sensei stood up despite Rei standing on his head. She fell off and thumped onto the floor. “Time for you to go home, I have a karate class that I have to teach soon.” Rei looked a bit disappointed, but nodded all the same. She slipped her feet into her geta sandals by the entrance and exited the building. _________________
