Hiroshi drummed his fingers on his knee as he waited for the third team member of their new genin team to turn up. Tetsuya was striding backwards and forwards in front of the seated Hiroshi, looking slightly annoyed at having to wait.
“First mission and not even on time. What have we gotten ourselves into?”
Hiroshi looked up at his friend and shook his head slightly, a grin still stuck on his face.
“Give her a chance Tets, we are early after all.”
“But it’s our first mission!”
Hiroshi laughed and stood up, stretching his back before patting the other genin on the shoulder reassuringly.
“We’ll leave a note explaining that we’ve gone for a walk and that we’ll be back later. Come on, let’s get you out of here before you wear out the floor with all your pacing.”
They both turned towards the doorway to see a shorter girl walking through it, a scowl evident on her face as she eyed the two male genin up with apparent disdain.
“You Hiroshi and Tetsuya?”
Hiroshi nodded and approached with his hand outstretched in greeting, a friendly smile on his lips as he sized up the girl.
She seems quite...fiery.
The girl looked down at the offered hand as though Hiroshi had been holding a dead puppy in it. Undeterred, the male genin retracted the hand and stepped back, wondering if there was anything redeeming about her personality other than her apparent bad manners.
“So, you must be Akina. I’m Hiroshi and this here is Tetsuya, looks like the genin part of the squad is complete at least. I read the small file that the academy provided; I hear you specialise in Ijutsu?”
A smirk finally broke through Akina’s guard as she nodded her head slightly.
“You hear correctly. Do you specialise in anything or are you the quote unquote comic relief?”
Hiroshi body flickered, seemingly teleporting from his standing position to right behind the newcomer.
“You could say I have some skills. Ninjutsu is my game; our hairy friend over there is a Puppet master. By the way, might I suggest you lower your sarcasm a bit, it’s already wearing a bit thin.”
Akina turned around to look at Hiroshi with a face like thunder and he almost thought she would throw a punch except for Tetsuya getting between the two and pushing them apart firmly.
“Can it you two, we are a team now and we can’t have any infighting if we are to avoid getting killed. Let’s head to the academy so we can meet up with the sensei they are assigning us to.”
Tetsuya flashed his friend a look that made it very clear it would be a good idea to drop the issue, so Hiroshi just shrugged and winked at Akina before turning around and walking out of the door and into the midday sun.
“Fair enough, let’s make a move. Wait a second, why is it so deserted out here?”
The street was empty despite the time of day and alarm bells began to flicker within Hiroshi’s mind as he looked around the area, alert for any sign of danger. As his two new teammates came out to join him in the street, a voice drifted out of one of the alleys that littered the street, a voice that Hiroshi had not heard for several years.
Oh please no...
“Well well well, little Hiroshi the runt. I have a bone to pick with you.”
Hiroshi and his teammates turned towards the alley from which the voice had come.
“Oh look, it’s Hetsuga. Remember him Tets? You know, the bully we played that trick on.”
Out of the shadows stalked Hetsuga, older and much much larger than Hiroshi remembered. As he stepped into the light Hiroshi had to stop himself wincing at the wicked scar that puckered across the whole left side of the boy’s face.
I did that.
Hetsuga did not look pleased, and the arrival of seven larger teenagers following him from the alley did nothing to perturb the adrenaline that was beginning to pump through Hiroshi’s body.
“I got kicked out of the academy because of you. They said I was too damaged to continue, so I joined these fine people. The Sand Eagles, a street gang. Heard of them?”
An intake of breath behind Hiroshi was ignored by the genin as he stared daggers at his former foe, a smile no longer evident on his face.
“I take it you’ve come to hurt me? Put me in my place?”
A wicked smile spread across the former bully’s face.
“Hurt you? No. Kill you? Most definitely, you and your two friends here.”
The eight youths charged the three genin, murderous intent clear in their eyes as Hiroshi steeled himself for battle, his right hand pulling a kunai from his pouch as he set his feet in a ready position for the fight ahead. _________________

Instinct kicked in. There was no pause, no shocked moment to soliloquise about a wasted youth ending so abruptly. No, Instead chakra formed at Tetsuya’s fingers almost before he consciously settled on a course of action. Five strings shot over his shoulder and yanked his puppet, Aiko, from the harness. The diminutive wooden construct came to life with a series of wooden clacks and lunged over Tetsuya as he took a few steps back-
Straight into the face of the Sand Eagle street urchin who was intent on killing the Genin. He shouted out in alarm as Aiko straddled his shoulders, her hands grasping his ears and didn’t budge when the youth’s hands clawed at her, his charge halted. Her smiling mouth opened inhumanly wide, and a spray of senbon shot out at point blank range into his face, changing the yell of surprise into one of pain.
Hiroshi was also in motion, however his wasn’t visible. With a body flicker he appeared behind another Sand Eagle and had a kunai driven into the spine before he could blink. He flickered again and was further behind the group, his hands already in motion performing the memorised seals.
“Katon: Housenka no Jutsu!” He shouted before spitting several fireballs into the rearmost two of the group.
They were instantly caught in the fireballs and dropped to the floor screaming, trying to smother the flames. Another Sand Eagle swung a sword down towards the exposed Tetsuya, who was pulling Aiko from the face of one antagonist and directing her to jump at another’s shoulder, a wicked-looking blade flicking out from her arm, however the Sand Eagles’ blade never reached its intended target. Akina’s kunai buried itself in his throat and he fell to the ground, gurgling and spraying blood over the floor of the alley.
The three yet-untested Genin paused in the brief interlude of combat as the Street Gang suddenly took stock of their downed compatriots and exchanged glances – clearly they’d under-estimated their opponents. _________________

Adrenaline surged through Hiroshi’s body as the short pause stretched, the young genin’s senses screaming for him to leap forward and attack again but somehow he held himself back.
Need to try and be analytical and not get caught up in the moment.
Looking over at his teammates, Hiroshi gave them both a quick nod and received one back from each in turn; all three moving forward in tandem as they suddenly sprang onto the attack. Two of the street thugs seemed to panic and moved forward in turn, weapons in their hands ready for the approaching genin as the two sides clashed. Hiroshi struck out with the kunai he held and was blocked by the nearest thug, but that left the teenager open to a vicious thrust from the diminutive Aiko puppet’s blade, the steel ripping into the youth’s chest as the puppet was flung by Tetsuya at the boy. Looking over at Akina, Hiroshi saw her finish off her own opponent with a viciously clinical slash at the throat, the young man dropping to the floor as his crimson blood washed into the sand that lay on the street of the alley. Looking around, Hiroshi failed to notice the instigator of the conflict and as he looked over at Tetsuya he saw mirrored his own expression of apprehension.
“If he has gone to get reinforcements, we are in trouble.”
Akina looked slightly puzzled at Tetsuya’s words as she plucked her kunai from the neck of the gang member she had killed early on into the fight.
“What do you mean? They wouldn’t be stupid enough to mess with us now would they? We just destroyed them!”
Hiroshi nodded slowly, his hand idly stroking his chin as he contemplated the possible courses of action that may be taken by Hetsuga and the gang after this setback.
“Yes we did, but the gang just lost seven of their members. Yes, they may not have been the best men that they possess but they will see this as some sort of attack on them rather than the other way around and they will be out for our blood in revenge. We can’t let Hetsuga get back to the Sand Eagles base or they will come back, a lot stronger and a lot better armed.”
“What the hell have you gotten us into? Why couldn’t I be in a team with someone who doesn’t attract trouble like metal to a magnet? Who did I offend to get lumped in with you?”
Hiroshi laughed at Akina’s words and nodded towards the end of the alley that they stood in, already beginning to move out.
“We need to catch him, and since none of us are particularly able trackers, we need to get information. Let’s start asking around, at the very least it will get this inevitable confrontation to hurry up and happen.”
Tetsuya shook his head in weary resignation as Akina sidled up to him and whispered quietly so that Hiroshi couldn’t hear.
“Is he always like this?”
“The short answer would be yes. Things happen with him around, and it never gets boring. Let’s go, looks like this might not be the walk in the park that I was expecting so be alert to trouble and let’s see what we can find out.” _________________

Given that the Sand Eagles members had approached them with their backs to the arterial road through Suna to the market, the trio of Genin figured that it would be a place to start. They didn’t even think to do anything about the seven corpses they’d left in the street – this was Suna, and violence was commonplace.
The marketplace was reassuringly bustling. The trio of Genin slid through the market-goers looking for some trace of their wayward Sand Eagle, however none was to be found. It was only when Akina nudged Tetsuya once again and said “I’m hungry, let’s take a break.” That they retired to a restaurant overlooking the marketplace and sat down at a table.
A waitress smiled sweetly as she approached the table.
“Three glasses of water, please.” Tetsuya said, smiling back.
“Of course! Anything else?”
“Yeah. Know anything about the Sand Eagles?” Hiroshi said, not bothering with small talk.
Her smile faltered slightly and she began to turn from the table. “The what? Sorry, I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Her tone changed abruptly.
Aiko rattled ominously and Hiroshi said “Try again.”
The cheery smile had disappeared completely, and now she just looked worried. The Ninja headbands each of the Genin wore did nothing to quell the unease, obviously. “All I know is that most of the villagers avoid the pottery warehouses on the far side of the Market. Please, don’t tell anyone I said anything!”
Without waiting for a reply, she veritably fled.
Akina speared Hiroshi with a look. “You could’ve at least got her to bring the food before scaring her off.”
Tets grinned to himself and stared out of the window at the Marketplace.
-=[]=-
The waitress didn’t bother to get their water. In fact, she didn’t even bother to let her boss know she’d left early. Instead, she headed straight from the restaurant and from the Market entirely. Despite the hot midday sun she ran like she was being chased by Gaara himself and crossed from the prosperous, civilised district of Suna into the more seedy area, far from the gates – a poor residential area with lots of abandoned hovels. Only her destination was most emphatically not abandoned.
A complicated series of knocks on the door opened it, and she was greeted with a wakizashi pressed against her neck.
“I’ve got to see Boss Nobu!” She hissed at the guard, who, seeing she was no threat, let her pass.
After an abbreviated genuflection, she looked up at the leader of the Sand Eagles, flanked by a pair of missing-nin Genin who’d found work with him and began babbling.
“I had no choice! They caught me off-guard! Three academy-fresh Genin were asking about the Sand Eagles, so I sent them to the Pottery warehouses like you instructed me to!”
He glanced behind her, and for the first time she saw another missing-nin Genin with a puckering scar across his face. Swallowing an involuntary gasp at his unsettling appearance, she turned her attention to Nobu, who was actually laughing.
“That’ll be your friends, Hetsuga. Take Noh and Ranmaru and some of my boys. Prepare the warehouse for them. I want their heads in front of me by sun-down. It’ll be the perfect message to send to the Kazekage.” He ordered.
‘Boss’ Nobu couldn’t be more than twenty five, yet all of the youths in the street gang seemed to look up at him like some sort of god – clearly he had a lot of charisma to attract such a band of followers.
“And you did well, Seina. Go back to work, and make yourself look presentable. We don’t want our little mice to catch wind too early, now, do we?” He grinned in an entirely unsettling manner, his eyes lingering on her chest before returning to look her in the eye, not even bothering to hide his interest.
She swallowed, nodded and left almost as quickly as she’d entered, wanting to put as much distance as she could between her and the Sand Eagles as was physically possible. Well, until Nobu deigned to visit her at night again. _________________

“Somehow, I don’t think our water is coming. Nice work Hiroshi, couldn’t just shut up and let me eat could you?”
The trio got solemnly to their feet and began to move out of the restaurant, Hiroshi stoically ignoring the rumbling in his stomach that came from missing his lunch. Still, they couldn’t exactly walk away from this yet, they needed to find some form of closure before they could disperse and do what they wanted.
Plus I want to see Hetsuga dead, once and for all.
The three genin slowly ambled through the marketplace and out towards the pottery warehouse which they had been pointed towards by the frightened barmaid, alert to any trouble as soon as they had left the relative safety of the market’s crowds. As they passed through what could only be described as a relatively rundown part of Sunagakure, their eyes were drawn to the four boys that waited at the intersection before them. Hetsuga, it seemed, was back and he had brought reinforcements with him as Hiroshi had expected.
“Be ready guys, these lackeys look stronger than the last ones we faced, so be ready for anything.” Hiroshi whispered to his comrades as they came to a halt and each of the three began preparing themselves, kunai being retrieved as well as Aiko being hoisted onto Tetsuya’s shoulder. The opening stalemate was broken by the puppet master pulling a string of chakra over his shoulder, connecting it to six of his kunai and flinging the weapons at the enemy group.
“Doton Doro Gaeshi!”
A wall of mud thudded up from the ground and stopped the kunai reaching their target as they embedded themselves in the earth wall. Hiroshi’s hands flitted into the necessary seals for his new fire jutsu and he spurted eight balls of flame out towards the wall but these too were stopped by the slab of earth. Hiroshi tapped his comrades shoulders and pointed to the left side of the wall before making his own move to the right side of it, scampering forwards with his kunai at the ready in his right hand. He skidded around the corner and body flickered, stabbing out with his weapon only to find it impact with a large brick from a nearby dilapidated building.
Body substitution? These guys aren’t too bad.
Hiroshi swung around and barely caught the thrust from Hetsuga’s weapon with his own kunai, a battle of wills striking up between the two which was ended clinically and quickly by a vicious head butt from the scarred youth. Hetsuga lashed out at the stumbling Hiroshi and managed to score a shallow cut on the genin’s left flank, but had to dive backwards himself as the kunai that Hiroshi had used before was flung viciously towards the other boys face. Hiroshi spared a glance over at his companions and was pleased to see them handling themselves well, a corpse on the floor with numerous senbon needles embedded in it’s face an indication of the brutally efficient method of Tetsuya’s puppet handling. Both Tetsuya and Akina were locked in combat with the two other Sand Eagles with attacks flying between the two groups with frequent ferocity.
Hiroshi rose to his feet, a new kunai in his hand as he darted forwards, a thrust dodged by his opponent at the last second before Hetsuga lashed out himself, only to find Hiroshi no longer where he had been previously. Hiroshi threw the kunai he held again and this time he found his target, the dagger-like weapon embedding itself into Hetsuga’s shoulder and causing the youth to yelp in pain as his own attack found it’s target, a punch collding with Hiroshi’s face and knocking the boy down to the floor.
“Retreat, fall back to the base.” Hetsuga cried and made a run for it, his final remaining companion throwing down a smoke bomb as he too ran in the direction of the pottery warehouse the genin team had earlier been pointed to. Hiroshi rose gingerly to his feet, his hand checking the deepness of the wound on his side and wincing as a wave of pain catapulted from the wound and arced through his body. His two teammates came over and without a word Akina examined the wound on his side, taking several seconds of looking and probing before nodding slightly to herself.
“You’ll live, it might hurt a bit but it won’t slow you down or anything.”
Hiroshi nodded in reply and retrieved the first kunai he had thrown unsuccessfully, looking over at the two corpses they had left and wincing slightly; the second death occurred from numerous stabs to the torso and neck and looked as though it had not been quick or painless.
At least they are on my side.
“Right, I think we know now that they are holed up in that pottery warehouse, so let’s go and finish this once and for all.” Hiroshi spoke up and the other two nodded, grim faced and ready for the fight that they knew they were walking into. It wouldn’t be easy, but an easy life was not the purpose of the shinobi of Sunagakure. _________________

Tetsuya wasted no time retrieving the senbon needles from his downed foes eyes, grimacing slightly at the sight of the ruined face. He reloaded Aiko with a practiced hand, then called the Kunai he’d thrown early on in the fight back to him, eager to get back at the gang of under skilled reprobates that had ambushed them twice already.
“Hang on, we know they like trying to get the jump on us and have tried twice now already. Anyone feel that it was a little too easy last time? They used less people than before, having already seen us in action.” Akina pointed out, absently wiping her bloodied kunai on a cloth.
“Hetsuga would’ve fought harder if he actually wanted to hurt us. Definitely a trap.” Hiroshi agreed.
“Substitutions, then?” Akina grinned.
“Oh you bet.”
-=[]=-
Akina, Tetsuya and Hiroshi entered the pottery barn brazenly, not even bothering to flinch when the several ill-timed kunai traps sprung and sent the dull black projectiles hurtling in at them. They all missed anyway.
“You can do better than that, Hetsuga.” Hiroshi chided, evoking a growl of consternation from the failed Genin.
He darted forward, chakra boosting his speed into a body flicker and jammed a kunai into Hiroshi’s surprised face-
A cloud of smoke erupted around him and suddenly his arm was weighed down by a wooden log – a substitution jutsu.
“Fuuton: Kamaitachi!” The girl accomplanying Hetsuga shouted and with a flourish, swept a fan open and through the air, blasting the three genin back through the door they came though (whilst Hetsuga leapt neatly from harm’s way). Unfortunately for Noh, the other two genin were substitutions too.
“Katon: Housenka no Jutsu!” six fireballs hurled in from above, scattering the trio of Sand Eagles Genin in different directions.
Noh was a tall woman. Quite inappropriately for living in the desert, she chose a long, flowing kimono with oversized sleeves and had given up a promising career as a ninja to act as a courtesan for Boss Nobu – a rising star in Suna’s underworld. Her hair was dark, matching her eyes, and the kimono she had chosen was a deep plum colour. Between her lacquered fingernails were 8 senbon needles and even brandishing such weapons she was able to hold herself with a haughty dignity brought about by her considerable physical allure and advanced age compared to her antagonists that wasn’t easily ruffled.
Unfortunately, her dignity was ruffled by a toddler-sized puppet lunging at her face, firing senbon needles from its mouth, brandishing a fully-deployed knife in its right arm.
She pealed out a scream as one of the fired Senbon found its mark and punctured her right eye and threw her payload of needles back in retaliation, however they only stabbed into lifeless wood – Aiko didn’t even flinch as it landed on her shoulders and jammed its knife into her neck repeatedly, all the while rattling like a decidedly out of tune percussion instrument.
Akina was chasing down her own opponent – a decidedly effeminate genin around her own age, who was clearly compensating for something with a sword the size of a sofa who yelped hysterically whenever one of her kunai sailed too close to his all-too-androgynous face.
Hiroshi, however, was squaring up to Hetsuga.
“These aren’t fair odds, you do realise.” Hiroshi pointed out as the puppet let Noh fall to the floor, gurgling into a growing puddle of her own blood and Ranmaru took a kunai to the thigh, dropping him to the floor with a squeal.
“You’re right. I shouldn’t have bothered to bring the other two; I can take you all on myself.” He smiled, and his scar curled unnaturally – an entirely sinister expression for one so young.
Hiroshi didn’t bother responding. Instead, he Body flickered, appearing directly before Hetsuga, Kunai in hand. A slash was met with a metallic clang as the missing-nin brought his own kunai up in a high block, and his thigh rose to meet a swiftly delivered knee to the groin, pushing the Genin away. His only warning of another attack was that ever-present clack of wooden joints moving, and then a pressure presented itself around his knees – the puppet had grabbed his legs in a bear hug and clamped its hands together, severely restricting his movement, and (more importantly) his balance. He fell heavily to the ground and grunted, only to look up as Hiroshi stood over him, glaring down at his academy rival.
He didn’t try and commemorate the deathblow with any pithy little sound-bite, which was just as well, as when he stabbed the kunai down into Hetsuga’s throat, he disappeared in a puff of smoke. Only a heavy ceramic clay pot remained: A substitution.
Tetsuya dropped down into the warehouse from the rafters just as Akina finished her own opponent by snapping his neck.
“What’s with you two and necks?” Hiroshi exclaimed, examining the corpses of Noh and Ranmaru, prodding them idly with his foot.
Akina shrugged, grinning. “Nice wide, easy target, and if I miss, I get their pretty faces.”
“Jugulars.” Tetsuya grunted as he pulled the senbon needles from Noh’s face and reloaded Aiko once more.
“Did we get him at all?” Akina asked, standing.
“Nope. We’d better get moving and hope we can track him.” Hiroshi replied, glancing significantly at Tetsuya, who looked incredibly put out that his pristine new puppet now had stab marks from 8 senbon needles in its torso.
“As soon as he stops playing with dolls, sure.” Akina replied, grinning. _________________

(OOC: Using 150 training points to reduce necessary score count by 1 to 4.)
--------------------------------
“Welcome back Hetsuga, I assume by your dishevelled look and arrival here that you succeeded in your mission and need some bodies to…disappear?”
Hetsuga’s momentary hesitation was answer enough for Nobu but he waited for the young man’s reply silently, hoping that his suspicions were wrong.
“Things didn’t go quite as well as I planned and I had to cut and run before I got killed along with those two useless genin you sent with me.”
“You were followed?”
“I don’t think so.”
“That wasn’t a question Hetsuga.”
The two Sand Eagles either side of the scarred genin grabbed his arms and held him firmly as Nobu stood up and plucked a kunai knife from the belt around his waist. The Eagles’ leader stalked forwards, kunai swinging on one finger as he approached the struggling Hetsuga. Stepping up to the former Suna student, he pressed the blade he held to the boy’s throat and paused before the killing blow momentarily.
“You failed me one time too many Hetsuga.”
The blade plunged into the young man’s throat and snuffed out his life in an instant as blood gushed from the fatal wound and Nobu walked away, beckoning to one of his other guards as he wiped his hands to remove Hetsuga’s blood from them.
“Ready the fighters, we have some incoming insects and I fully intend to crush them utterly.”
=====-----^*^-----=====
Even as that conversation was going on, the trio of genin who had tracked Hetsuga were rapidly closing in on their target building; a seemingly abandoned building in one of the poorer districts of Sunagakure. They halted a block away from the building and huddled together to discuss strategy for their impending assault.
“This won’t be as easy as that last fight, they know we are coming and this time it’s their main base of operations. Probably a good thing that we warned our new Sensei of where we were going before we left that last place so we may have some much needed reinforcements incoming at any moment.”
Akina looked over at Tetsuya and gave him a puzzled look.
“He’s pessimistic and states the obvious; why do you put up with him again?”
Tetsuya turned to Hiroshi and grinned at the other genin’s raised brow as he waited for his friend’s answer.
“He’s loyal, smart and strong. Oh, and he can be quite funny when you get past his occasional childishness.”
“Thanks Tets, you always say the sweetest things. Anyway, we’ve gotta assume that they know we’re coming and have lots of peons to throw at us. No matter how weak each of their members may be, enough of them will finish us all the same, so we need to have some sort of plan. Any ideas?” Hiroshi said as he surveyed his fellow genin with raised eyebrows and a hopeful hint in his voice.
“To be honest, they won’t let Hetsuga live for his failure, so I reckon another substitution might work quite well as they won’t have seen us use it before.”
Akina shook her head slightly, eyes focusing on a point on the ground between the two young men.
“One little change to that, might be worth trying to use bunshins instead of substitution so that we can try to get ourselves into the best possible position before we finally make our move.”
Tetsuya nodded and Aiko rattled ominously as a grin spread across his face, eyes glinting maliciously as he contemplated the havoc he would cause.
“I like it, shall we do this then?”

No matter how stealthy an approach may be, when you have over ten people watching out for your arrival you are guaranteed to be spotted. It was such with the three genin who were sneaking up to Nobu’s hideout in the poor district, their approach watched closely by several of the guards who were hidden about the entrance to the building.
“Stay calm, no need to act until they do guys. As soon as they make their position known, we take them out.”
“You’re not the boss here Hiroshi, we know what to do.”
Their approach was slow as they attempted to move from cover to cover as quietly and inconspicuously as possible, but the three genin were doomed to failure and as the trio reached the doors, the scene exploded. Kunai were flung from three different locations towards the genin, but all three of the attacks were dodged by the three young Suna students. They ran, looking for cover as the kunai flurried after them, constantly firing out until suddenly all was silent.
“I see you got yours then, let’s move out.”
The bunshin had done their job and then some, as the trio of genin infiltrated the building while their clones entered through the front door, brazenly approaching what appeared to be their impending death. _________________
